The Rewards of Working in Workers’ Compensation PA

I have been working in the legal field for 30 years. I worked my first 10 years in family law and have spent my last 20 years in workers compensation PA law. I would not want to work in any other field because it is just so rewarding.

Working in Pennsylvania Workers’ Comp is Rewarding and Fulfilling

Meeting each and every client with their individual stories on how they were injured and what they go through with their treatment is inspiring and I feel lucky that I am able to help them get through this difficult part of their lives. I let the clients know they are not going through this alone and even though they feel like they are being targeted by the workers’ compensation insurance company, I reassure them this does not just happen to them; it is part of the process and we are here for them every step of the way.

My History Working in Workers Compensation PA

I started working for a solo practitioner in 2001. He was caring and compassionate and wanted the best outcome for his clients. When the attorney I was working for started planning his retirement he needed to find a workers compensation PA law firm who he could transition his clients to and after meeting with the owners of Pearson Koutcher Law, he knew they would be the best fit for his remaining clients. He chose Pearson Koutcher as that firm and I knew immediately it was also a perfect fit for me to continue working in this field with Pearson Koutcher as they have those same caring and compassionate qualities for their clients.

I work in the Bethlehem Office of Pearson Koutcher Law and I am a legal assistant to Attorney Shawn Dethlefsen.

The attorneys and staff make every effort to make sure the clients are taken care of and answer any questions the clients may have promptly.

Changes to Workers Compensation PA Practice Because of Covid-19

When businesses were shut down due to Covid-19 Pearson Koutcher made sure everyone was able to work from home so the clients would feel comfortable and knew they were not forgotten. This was a major change for everyone, so we needed to make sure the clients knew the new protocols for hearings and depositions. Everything was now being held virtually or by telephone and we needed to go over the steps with the clients, so they knew exactly what steps to take to participate in their hearings and depositions.

First-hand Experience Dealing with the Stress of a Work Injury

I know first-hand how stressful a work injury can be as I had to go through a work injury with my husband. My husband had three shoulder surgeries due to a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum. All we could think about was getting him back to work as soon as possible because we just had our first child, and I was out of work and now my husband was injured. We were worried about our finances and never thought about the consequences of rushing back to work, which is why he kept re-tearing his rotator cuff and why he needed three surgeries. The most important thing you need to realize is you need time to heal and let the professionals help you get through this roadblock.

Helping People Move Past Work Injury is Rewarding

When I first started doing workers’ compensation there was one client in his early 30’s that was injured while working. He was working in a big drum doing HVAC work and slipped and hit the back of his neck. He went to the hospital and he was released. The next morning, he could not move and was rushed to the emergency room. The hospital performed an MRI and it showed he had a spinal cord injury and was now paraplegic. After years of physical therapy and treating with specialists he was able to regain use of his upper body and some movement of his legs with assistance. After 15 years he was finally able to move on with his life and settle his case. Helping clients settle their cases and move on with their lives is one of the rewarding parts of my job.

One thing I absolutely love about working in the field of workers’ compensation is letting the clients know they will be okay, and they will get through this. It is so rewarding when a client trusts you and puts their life in your hands and says thank you for everything you have done for me and my family.
